A Thunderbolt Arrival

It’s been one remarkable season for Sophie in her debut NSL season at AO Manchester Thunder.

Moving to England and joining AO Manchester Thunder represented a significant step in Sophie Fawns’ career. Having already established herself as one of Australia’s most exciting young attacking talents, Fawns made the bold decision to test herself in the Netball Super League, arriving in Manchester ahead of the 2026 campaign. With a new country, new teammates and a new league to adapt to, there were naturally questions about how quickly she would settle, but Karen Greig saw her as a player capable of making an immediate impact. Her debut season would ultimately justify that faith and then some.

The announcement of Fawns’ move generated considerable interest across the UK netball community. Thunder supporters were excited by the prospect of welcoming a player with proven pedigree from one of netball’s strongest nations, while pundits and fans across the league were eager to see how her game would translate to the increasingly competitive Super League. Fittingly, she was named Player of the Match in the Grand Final victory over London Pulse at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena.

The season’s crowning moment arrived in front of a packed Co-op Live crowd, with members of Fawns’ family making the journey to witness the occasion firsthand. They watched as Thunder secured a dramatic 54-51 victory over London Pulse to lift the Netball Super League title, delivering the perfect ending to an unforgettable first season in England. The triumph was made even more special as it came during Manchester Thunder’s 25th-anniversary year, a milestone celebrated with the club’s fifth league title.

For Fawns, it was the culmination of a remarkable debut campaign — and Thunder supporters will be delighted that her story in black and gold is not over yet, with the Australian set to return for the 2026/27 season.
