Watson signs on until 2028

Diamonds and Sunshine Coast Lightning Captain Liz Watson will remain at the Lightning until the end of the 2028 season.

Watson, Lightning player #33, continued to grow her world-class resume in 2026, claiming the inaugural Steph Fretwell Medal.

Watson also captained the Diamonds at the recent Glasgow Commonwealth Games, leading Australia to Bronze.

At Super Netball level, Watson believes that the club has unfinished business and is eager for the new season to get underway.

“As a playing group we were disappointed with how last season finished, so I know many of us are keen to get back into pre-season,” she said

“Bringing success back to the Coast is something at the forefront of my mind and I’m excited to be here for another two seasons.

“The Sunshine Coast has been so good to me since I arrived, and I want to be able to give back to our fans and members, with another successful Lightning era.”

Head coach of the Sunshine Coast Lightning Belinda Reynolds applauded Watson on her leadership since joining the club in 2024.

“Liz has been a great asset to the club both on and off court since arriving here three years ago,” she said.

“As the leader of this team, she does an exceptional job of driving the standards and is something we know she will bring week in, week out over the next two seasons.

“Having a player of Liz’s experience helps the entire group, as we look to return to the pointy end of the competition.”

Watson has committed until the end of the 2028 season with the Sunshine Coast Lightning, becoming the second player to re-sign following the announcement of Ava Black’s two-year deal.
