Celebrations as Wales are 6th!

Wales Netball CEO Sarah Boswell has been speaking about this achievement.

Wales Netball has officially climbed into the top six of the World Netball Rankings for the first time in history, following the latest annual update by World Netball. This remarkable achievement comes after an undefeated 2024/2025 campaign, showcasing the strength and determination of the Welsh Feathers on the international stage.

The rankings update, released today, reflects the most current performances of international teams, with older results from 1st July 2020 to 28th February 2022 removed from the rating period. Matches played between 1st March 2023 and 29th February 2024 now have a reduced weighting, ensuring the rankings best represent teams’ recent form.

This historic rise from 9th to 6th place underscores the progress made by players, coaches, and staff in driving Welsh netball forward. However, as the team prepares for a massive three-year cycle—with the Youth World Cup in Gibraltar (2025), the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (2026), and the Netball World Cup in Australia (2027)—sustained investment will be crucial.

Speaking on this milestone, Wales Netball CEO, Sarah Boswell, highlighted the significance of long-term investment in the sport:

“Wales Netball’s rise from 9th to 6th in the world rankings is proof of what can be achieved with dedication and talent, but to sustain and build on this success, investment is critical. In 2025, I want to see a real acceleration in investment—financial, structural, and cultural—into the game. With three huge years ahead, the Youth World Cup in Gibraltar in 2025, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2026, and the World Cup in Australia in 2027, now is the time to back Wales Netball. This isn’t just about funding the game; it’s about strengthening the entire ecosystem: coaching pathways, media representation, commercial opportunities, and grassroots development. Women’s sport isn’t an add-on; it’s a powerhouse deserving of real, long-term commitment.”

Sara Moore, Head of Performance, also reflected on what this achievement means for the team and the future:

“Reaching number 6 in the world is an incredible milestone for Wales Netball. To achieve the highest ranking in our history is a testament to the hard work, commitment, and talent of our players, coaches, and staff. I am confident that we will continue to build on this success, and I will be working closely with Emily Handyside and the team as we head towards the Netball World Cup in 2027 to ensure that the Welsh Feathers remain among the best in the world.”

World Netball Rankings Update

While Wales Netball has made history by breaking into the top six, the top five rankings remain unchanged. However, New Zealand has closed the gap on first-placed Australia, reducing the difference from 12 to nine points, while Jamaica has solidified its position in third place. England remains fourth but now sits seven points behind the Sunshine Girls.
