New appointments in Netball Australia board
The Netball Australia Board is pleased to announce two key board appointments to ensure the sport is focused and committed to achieving ongoing growth and success.
Respected business and community leader the Hon Gabrielle Upton has now been appointed as a director for a three-year term. Gabrielle was appointed earlier this year to fill a casual vacancy on the Board.
Board Chair Wendy Archer AM said Ms Upton’s new appointment reflected her drive, passion and deep governance experience as a Non-executive Director and in the legal and financial sectors here and overseas.
Ms Upton was the NSW Government’s first female Attorney General and served in five other senior portfolios, including as Minister for Sport. She was previously the Deputy Chancellor of the University of New South Wales.
“In the short time Gabrielle has been on the Board she has demonstrated her strong leadership skills and commitment to netball,’’ Ms Archer said.
“The Board is focused on the future growth of netball participation, commercial partnerships and our key stakeholders and Gabrielle will continue to play an important role helping the Board achieve continued success.’’
Ms Upton said netball was set for major growth and that she was excited to work closely with her fellow directors on the future strategy.
“The passion and commitment I have seen in the game at the grassroots and elite level makes it very exciting to be part of the growth of this amazing sport, building on strong foundations,’’ Ms Upton said.
Ms Archer said the Board had also renewed Mo’onia Gerrard as the nominated Athlete Director for a further 12 months. She was first appointed in March last year.
Ms Gerard is a former international netball player with a strong passion for the growth of netball at both a grassroots and professional level. She is currently involved with the game across a number of areas including playing, coaching and mentoring both domestically and internationally.
“Mo’onia uses her experience to work closely with key stakeholders to ensure that all elite athletes in the game are provided the environment that offers opportunities for continual growth and support,’’ Ms Archer said.
Ms Gerrard said she was committed to ensuring the players are valued and that netball is a very inclusive environment.
“I am excited about the future and ensuring strong collaboration between all levels of the sport,’’ she said.
“I am proud that netball has always played a key role in the community providing opportunities and pathways for girls and young women to achieve their dreams and I am determined to ensure that the game will continue to provide inspiration to future generations.’’
