Preview: Wasps V Stars

Wasps Netball are looking to “stamp their authority” against Severn Stars as they look to bounce back from their first defeat in the Vitality Netball Superleague.

Tamsin Greenway’s team will be looking to get back to winning ways, following the 44-57 loss to Loughborough Lightning at the Ricoh Arena, as they make the short trip to the University of Worcester Arena to face Severn Stars on Friday, March 11 (8.00pm centre-pass).

Severn Stars have won just one of their opening four games this season, beating Celtic Dragons, while Wasps Netball have taken victory in three of their opening four games. Like Wasps, Stars are new additions to the Vitality Netball Superleague for the 2016/17 season.

Wasps Netball centre Sophia Candappa says her team need to put on a big performance as they take to the court for the second Midlands battle in a week.

She said: “Severn Stars will be really up for this game, they’re a team who have had a few losses so far, so we need to go in there and stamp our authority on the game. Every game that we play we’re out there to win, it’s another Midlands rivalry so we want to play well and make sure we get the win.”

“People think we’re the team to beat – that’s a mental challenge in itself and one that we are all looking forward to taking on. As long as we are making progress game by game that’s what we want to see. Tamsin will send us in there with a strong game-plan that focuses on us, on what we can do to win, it’s down to us to execute that plan out on court and get the victory on Friday.”

Wasps endured a tough shooting night in the loss to Loughborough Lightning, with the team trying various combinations on the court in a bid to turn their fortunes around.

They were unable to turn it around, losing their 100% record start to the Superleague season but Wasps Director of Netball Tamsin Greenway is determined to bounce back and learn from the defeat.

She added: “We struggled in attack against Loughborough, turnovers were also an issue and we are working hard to make sure that doesn’t happen again this Friday.

“We will be expected to win against Severn Stars. It’s a game I want to go into and win, it’s a game we should win, and we’ll be putting some things in place to make sure that we come out of it on top.

“Every game is tough in this league and you can’t take any team lightly. The girls will have to be right at the top of their game and I know they are determined to bounce back and ensure we get back to winning ways on the court.”

Following the away trip, Wasps Netball will return to the Ricoh Arena to face Manchester Thunder on Friday, March 24. (8.00pm centre pass).
