From Storm Clouds to Thunder Rolls
We have been looking back at Josie Huckles contribution to AO Manchester Thunder over the last few seasons as she leaves.
Josie Huckle’s time with AO Manchester Thunder may have been relatively short, but her impact on the club was significant. Huckle joined Thunder ahead of the 2023 season after the collapse of Wasps Netball, initially arriving as a Training Partner before earning a place in the full Super League squad. An experienced defender and former Wasps captain, she quickly established herself as a key member of Karen Greig’s defensive unit and became one of the club’s most dependable performers.
Huckle brought a wealth of experience to Thunder, having already won four Netball Super League titles before arriving in Manchester. Her presence helped strengthen a defensive end that consistently ranked among the league’s best. In her debut Thunder season in 2023, she became a regular starter and played a major role in the club securing a third-place finish. Her performances were recognised with a contract extension for 2024, reflecting the value she added both on and off the court.
When announcing Huckle’s return for the 2024 season, Head Coach Karen Greig said:
“I’m delighted to have Josie back with us for the 2024 season. Josie was thrown into the starting seven last year after Yasmin Roebuck’s injury, and I don’t think she put a foot wrong. She brought a calming influence to our defensive end and showed week in, week out just how experienced and reliable she is. Having someone of Josie’s quality and character in our environment is invaluable.”
During her three seasons with Thunder, Huckle’s influence continued to grow. In 2025 she was appointed vice-captain, a testament to the leadership qualities she had demonstrated since joining the franchise. Her defensive statistics regularly placed her among the team leaders for interceptions, gains, deflections and pickups, while her experience and professionalism provided a strong example for younger players developing within the Thunder pathway.
Beyond the numbers, Huckle embraced the culture of Manchester Thunder and became an important part of the club’s leadership group. Having joined during a period of uncertainty following Wasps’ demise, she seized her opportunity and helped maintain Thunder’s status as one of the Netball Super League’s leading teams. Her commitment, resilience and defensive excellence ensured she left a lasting mark on the club and its supporters.
“She is a seasoned NSL player and will bring even more experience into our defence end I’m really looking forward to having her in our environment.”
These comments reflect the respect Huckle earned during her time at Manchester Thunder and the important role she played within Karen Greig’s squad.
