R3: Sirens Vs Rhinos
For the first time in two years the Strathclyde Sirens were back home playing at the Emirates Arena. Sirens hosted Leeds Rhinos in the 3rd round of the Vitality Netball Superleague and in a fiercely contested match, Rhinos came out on top defeating Sirens 45-43.
The team were eager to put on a show for the Sirens Tribe after 2 years of no home crowds. Both teams came out firing and Sirens managed to get on top of their opposition leading 6-3 after the first 5 minutes. Rhinos brought it back level, but it was the combination of Dix and Abernethy round the circle edge that highlighted the determination from the Sirens as they took the first quarter 12-10.
There were no changes in the Sirens line-up as the second quarter was underway. In what was proving to be a physical battle, the score line went goal for goal with the Sirens defence looking to turn over ball for their team. Maxwell replaced Abernethy at centre immediately making an impact in attack and defence. The team showed composure against a physical Rhinos side with the visitors taking the lead at halftime, 24-22.
The second half kicked off with no changes for Sirens. Vinkhumbo and Nicholl were solid in defence coming away with flying intercepts as Boyle and Abernethy came on hoping to make an impact in attack. Rhinos took it up a notch, sinking a couple of shots in a row with Oyesola in at goal defence causing issue for the Sirens shooters. Leeds Rhinos extended their lead 37-30 with 15 minutes left to play for.
With 15 minutes remaining, Maxwell re-entered the court at wing defence hoping to shut down the Rhinos attack. The support from the crowd combined with Tyrrell entering the court lifted the team as they closed in on their opposition, narrowing a 10-goal deficit to 2. Nicholl and Tyrrell linked well together, constantly communicating and coming away with lots of ball. After a 60-minute battle Leeds Rhinos took the win 45-43 with Emily Nicholl receiving player of the match.
