R2 : Pulse Vs Bath
The Atlantic House sponsored London Pulse were hoping for a positive showing after their first round performance.
Quarter one started off well with two early interceptions from Jasmin Odeogberin and Ash Dekker, giving Pulse a one-goal advantage. Team Bath’s attackers were attempting to figure out how to deal with the stubborn combo of Funmi Fadoju and Odeogberin in the circle as the quarter ended with a London Pulse score of 12-9.
The outstanding Fadoju picked up a soaring intercept to start the following quarter, setting the tone for London Pulse. The defence of Team Bath did not miss a beat and continued to make life difficult for Pulse attackers. With a 5-goal lead midway through the third quarter, Team Bath switched to Betsy Creak at GS as a substitution for Kim Borger. London Pulse attack became more slick as the quarter continued as Olivia Tchine and Kira Rothwell linked well.
In the third quarter, Team Bath used a new sauce; they weren’t about to give up without a fight. Layla Guscoth and Molly Hole’s tenacious defence was putting the Pulse attack under a lot of strain. Samantha Bird, on the other hand, had complete faith in the team even as Bath’s offence began to adjust to the London team’s defence, with Creak and Drakeford-Lewis working well as a combination.
Jayda Pechova, a rookie, was given the nod to take the court against Team Bath, and made it clear she did not show up just to play. Pechova had three interceptions in just five minutes on the court, prompting Team Bath to summon Borger back onto the court.
The heat had been turned up to eleven going into the final quarter. Both London Pulse and Team Bath were ready and raised the intensity, but Pulse maintained the upper hand. Bath threw everything they had at the London side and a strong performance from Layla Guscoth closed the margin to one goal.
With four minutes remaining, both teams were on equal footing and all fourteen players were giving it their all. Pulse had other plans, cranking it up a notch and going on a three-goal streak. With 20 seconds left, Tchine shot her final goal to secure a 52-48 victory for London Pulse.
