R2: Sirens Vs Wasps
Strathclyde Sirens defeated Wasps 50-44 in what was a fiercely contested match.
Wasps started strongest of the two sides with both teams coming off a loss and looking to improve on yesterday’s performance. Sirens settled into the game and showed great composure under the defensive pressure from Wasps. Sirens captain Gia Abernethy was solid in transition from defence to attack, providing the team with options through the court. Abernethy’s partnership with Dix was strong around the circle edge, working the ball into their shooters. In what was a fiercely contested 1st quarter, Wasps took the lead 12-11.
All still to play for as the 2nd quarter was underway and McCall in at goal attack was proving why she is titled the ‘Long Bomb Queen’, sinking shots from distance. Defensively, Sirens combined well to try and slow down the Wasps attack and deny easy access into Dunn under the post. McKevitt was crucial for Sirens, linking well with the defense, providing Goodwin and McCall with opportunities to put the team in front. After the first 30 minutes, Wasps extended
their lead 25-21.
With an unchanged line-up, Sirens came out of the halftime break firing, determined to close in on their opposition. Nicholl stood up in defense, applying pressure and coming away with flying intercepts. This gave the team confidence as they managed to take the lead for the first time in
the match. Sirens forced some positional changes to the Wasps line-up and managed to hold onto their lead 35-31 with 15 minutes left to play.
Heading into the last quarter with the same 7 on court, Sirens found their rhythm, confidently letting the ball go with Goodwin and McCall standing up in the shooting circle. Some excellent passages of play off of Vinkhumbo’s interceptions allowed Sirens to push ahead of a strong Wasps side. Dix in at wing attack had great vision and slick feeds into the shooting circle for Sirens. After a tough 60 minute battle, Sirens defeated Wasps to gain their first win of the 2022 season, 50-44.
Final Score: 50-44
