When Geva Mentor received a phone call from the British deputy high commissioner to Australia, she thought she was in trouble. “She said, ‘I’ve got some news for you’ and I thought ‘Oh my gosh, what have I done?’” Mentor laughs. It was December, early summer in Melbourne, and she was looking forward to coming back to the UK for the festive break. That day, Christmas came early: a CBE for services to netball, awarded by the country she will always call home and announced over the phone by her adopted one.
