Elia McCormick returns
Manchester Thunder Welcomes Home Defender Elia McCormick After Recovery from Her ACL Injury
Elia McCormick started on her Manchester Thunder netball journey when she was fourteen years old, where she was chosen to be a part of the Thunder Performance Pathway. In 2021, McCormick was selected to be a training partner for the Thunder Superleague squad, where she became a regular member of the matchday team, making her Superleague debut and playing in twenty games throughout the season.
In 2022, McCormick was rewarded with a full contract for the 2022 season. However, during pre-season, she suffered an ACL injury, which forced her to have surgery and pull out of the 2022 season.
ACL injuries are one of the most common types of knee injuries, which causes the knee to become very unstable and lose its full range of motion. It therefore makes it very difficult to perform movements such as turning on the spot, which as a netball player is essential.
Elia McCormick said, “I’m excited to be back at Thunder for the 2023 season after being out last year with my ACL. My rehab is going really well thanks to all the coaches and the team there [at Thunder.]”
“I’m hoping to help the team break even more records next year and of course bring back the title again. It’ll be exciting to work with new players in the defence circle, and try out new combinations.”
Karen Greig, Head Coach and Director of Netball for Manchester Thunder, said, “After a devastating knee injury in pre-season last year, I am so happy to be able to re-sign Elia. She has still been in and around the squad over the last 12 months so hasn’t really missed a beat. She proved in the 2021 season how much potential she has with her ability to cover all 3 defence positions and unsettle attacking units. I am excited to see what Elia can do this season and have her back on court.”
