WEST COAST FEVER (71) DEFEAT COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES (57)

Prolific goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler was at her unstoppable best as the West Coast Fever cruised to a 71-57 victory over Collingwood Magpies in Brisbane on Tuesday night.

The league’s two-time leading goalscorer was the dominant figure at Nissan Arena with 62 points as the Fever won every quarter to snap a two-game losing sequence.

Fowler scored her team’s first 19 points of the game and made 49 consecutive shots to lead the West Coast attack while Verity Charles (31 feeds, 21 assists) and Ingrid Colyer (28 feeds, 15 assists) won the midcourt battle.

A back injury kept captain Courtney Bruce out of the Fever’s one-goal win over the Magpies in round three but the Diamonds defender stood out with six intercepts and eight deflections.

“I feel like I’ve been building and to actually get 60 minutes out there, feeling really confident and good with the work out the front, it felt great,” Bruce said as the Fever moves into fourth spot ahead of Sunday’s clash with the Sunshine Coast Lightning.

Geva Mentor battled valiantly against Fowler, and Gabi Sinclair finished with sox from eight shooting from two-point range, but the Magpies struggled for attacking options with promising goaler Nyah Allen (illness) joining injured midcourter Molly Jovic on the sidelines.

Collingwood’s fourth loss in a row leaves them anchored to the bottom of the ladder ahead of a crucial clash against the Giants on Saturday.

The Magpies managed to keep pace with Sinclair scoring the only Suncorp Super Shot for the quarter but Fowler’s efficiency under the post secured a 17-14 lead.

Collingwood continued to cough up the ball in the second period as the Fever converted six turnovers into goals, pushing the lead out to 11 before Sinclair chimed in with three super shots to reduce the margin to 39-30 at halftime.
West Coast charged ahead by 14 early in the second half and while the Magpies made some inroads during the third and fourth quarters, the Fever ensured there would be no repeat of their nail-biting finish from earlier in the season.
