Fran Williams Blog (4th Apr 2019)
The Wasps star writes her latest blog for The Netball Show with Mizuno
We had a tough week on the road with Wasps last week but we bounced back strongly against London Pulse on Sunday.
We stick together through all of our victories and we do the same in defeat, so it was great to get back to winning ways.
Before the win, we lost two big games in similar ways. After controlling large periods and competing throughout, we’d unfortunately not been able to see matches out in the last few minutes.
One way we’re looking to combat this is by recreating pressure situations in training and doing plenty of analysis throughout the week, and that paid off when we returned to Ricoh Arena on Sunday against London Pulse.
We sat and watched the last 15 minutes of the Loughborough game together as a group, we all took it in and reflected. I think we’ve all benefited from that.
We had a really positive training session on top of that and I know we can stick together through tough losses and all we’re thinking about is getting back on track on Sunday.
The winning culture is a huge part of the Wasps DNA. All of us are used to winning and we set such high standards for ourselves.
We’re in a good position heading into the final six games of the season and I know we are more than capable of securing a top-four spot.
On the other side of things, it’s been another busy month of university life for me, and a really exciting time with the University of Birmingham Netball team.
Luckily, I’m coming towards the end of the exam season, so it will be great to have some time to focus purely on netball after a busy period of exam preparation.
In the BUCS quarter-final we beat Leeds Beckett quite comfortably, and we had a great semi-final against Bath with a fantastic crowd.
We had a really strong start and built on from that, and it was a great feeling to know we’d be playing in a final against a really top side.
We were definitely the underdogs heading into the final game, and we knew it was a case of going and enjoying the occasion and just seeing what we can do. For the whole squad it was our first experience of a Big BUCS Wednesday.
Unfortunately, we lost the final to Hertfordshire University who are a very strong, experienced side. However, it was a competitive game and I was proud of the way we challenged them right up until the end. It was a shame that silly errors cost us in the end.
Right now my focus is with Wasps and I can’t wait to get back out on the court at Ricoh Arena again on Saturday with the rest of the girls.
Team Bath will not be an easy game and we’ll need all the support we can get from our incredible fans.
I’ll see you at the game.
Allez, Allez, Allez.
