Thistles road to NWC 2019

This year the Vitality Netball World Cup 2019 is taking place in Liverpool from 12th to the 21st July 2019.

Our Scottish Thistles qualified in 9th Place at the Netball World Cup 2019 Regional Qualifiers – Europe. The Thistles won both their matches over the weekend, having beaten Wales 52-40 in the opening game of the weekend, and claiming a 52–31 victory over fellow World Cup Qualifier’s Northern Ireland at the final day of competition in Perth.

So, what’s next for the Thistles? 

Scottish Thistles V Gibraltar – 23rd March – Oriam, Edinburgh

First up, the Thistles have their International Test Match against Gibraltar Netball. This test match will take place on the 23rd March in Oriam, Edinburgh. For the Thistles this is an opportunity for the team and management to test out combinations and utilise their long squad in preparation for the #RoadToLiverpool campaign.

 Vitality Netball World Cup 2019

The next time we will see the Thistles, they will be at the beginning of their NWC2019 campaign.

Preliminaries Stage One – 12th to 14th July

First up, the Thistles take part in the Preliminaries – Stage one, of the NWC2019. All teams will compete in four round-robin groups (A, B, C and D) which each group consisting of four teams each.

The top eight teams were pre-assigned to groups, with one team from the 9th-12th seeds and one from the 13th-16th seeds drawn randomly into each group.

The Thistles were randomly selected for Group D, with England, Uganda and Samoa. Details of each Preliminaries: Stage 1 Group can be found here.

The top three finishers in each group (A, B,C and D) will then progress to Preliminaries: Stage Two to compete for the title. The matches for Stage 2 will be determined by the results of Stage 1.

Preliminaries Stage Two – 15th to 18th July

In the second stage of the competition, the top three teams from groups A and B will form group F, and the top three teams from groups C and D will form group G. The bottom four finishers from groups A to D will compete for 13th-16th places in group E.

Play-offs and Placings – 19th to 21st July

The teams finishing first and second in groups F and G will go through to the semi-finals, with the top placed team in each group facing the second placed team in the other group. The winners of each semi-final will compete for gold in the final, with the losers playing for bronze.
