The Net Surrey Storm

Surrey Storm 53 – 44 Sirens

Surrey Storm belatedly earned a first home victory of the season as a solid full-court display brought a comprehensive win.

Sigi Burger dominated against a Strathclyde side shorn of their own sharp-shooter, Cat Tuivaiti, and Storm steadily pulled away to end the game with a double-digit advantage.

Yasmin Hodge-England netted in the final seconds of the first quarter to establish a 13-11 lead, which soon became 20-15 thanks to another goal for Burger, whose movement frequently created ample space under the net. However, Storm errors allowed Sirens to close the gap to six at half-time.

Illuminated by one particularly impressive interception from Player of the Match Shadine van der Merwe – which allowed Burger an easy shot under the net – Storm dominated the third quarter to lead 41-31 with 15 minutes left.

Thereafter Storm kept Sirens at bay, despite a brief resurgence which reduced the arrears to seven goals, and typically swift, incisive passing through the thirds allowed Burger to ensure that Storm were never unduly pressurised.
